In 2016, my friend Aaron Leighton asked if I wanted to collaborate on something and I quickly said yes. Neither of us had anything particular in mind but the idea that we would start and follow ourselves as we went. We started with a small stack of blank wood panels.
Each piece started with one of us and was finished by the other. We gave each other the freedom to start or finish in any way that feels “right” — even when that means substantially covering the original layer. We wanted to excise preciousness from the process and let the combination of our styles/processes end in something outside both of us.
All of the pieces shown here were exhibited as “Leighton : Risk" at Liberty Arts Gallery in Toronto from September 16–28 2018.
